Quinta de Santa Luzia do Carrascal

in the Douro Superior, Trás-os-Montes

The estate is located in the eastern part of the Douro Valley in North Portugal, the Douro Superior. It once belonged to the large Quinta do Carrascal of the Miller Guerra family, dating back to 1820. Nowadays it is divided. The chapel on the estate gave name to this part and marriages still take place here. 22 of the 57 acres of land are planted with vines and about 5 with olive trees.
The current owner has renovated the buildings beautifully. The main building is still used by the family. The holiday homes you can find in the old stables, the previous home of the ‘caseiro’ (caretaker) or for example the room where they used to distil their ‘aguardente’ (brandy). The ‘adega’ (winery) is modernised, maintaining the old ‘lagares’ in which the grapes will be trodden again by foot. In this way you get best extraction possible of colour, tannins and flavours, very important for high quality vintage port and top class fine Douro wine. The cottages and villas are situated around a beautiful fenced garden where you can relax in the shade of the olive trees.

You are in Trás-os-Montes, with Mirandela as the centre of the olive oil production. Early spring is the time to visit the region to see the blossoming almond trees and join the parties. Towns like Vila Flor are worthwhile visiting at only 15 minutes from the quinta. Here you can also do your daily shopping. Or in Torre de Moncorvo at 10 minutes. In 20 minutes you are in Pocinho, where you can start a breathtaking train ride along the Douro river. Nearby you can also find the mouth of the river Sabor and Nature Parks as the Serra de Reboredo and the Douro Internacional on both sides of the border with Spain. The Quinta is also a perfect base for a castle route or a visit to the Park of the Vale de Côa with its prehistoric rock paintings.

One of the living rooms can be transformed into a large dining room where you can enjoy your meal together.

All the cottages and villas (detached) are decorated with style and have central heating and air-conditioning. The kitchens are well equipped with dishwasher, microwave, coffee and tea maker, etc. There is a large swimming pool (shared) with a separate paddling pool.

From the quinta it is about three hours to Porto as well as it is to the airport of Valladolid in Spain. For wine lovers it is a perfect location to combine with a stay in the top wine region Ribera del Duero east of Valladolid. In the meanwhile you can also visit Toro and Rueda. Toro is an upcoming region for red wines where Rueda already made name with its white wines.
